Effect of Naturally Occurring Compounds on Fumonisin Production and fum Gene Expression in Fusarium verticillioides

چکیده

Fusarium verticillioides, one of the most common pathogens in maize, is responsible for yield losses and reduced kernel quality due to contamination by fumonisins (FBs). Two F. verticillioides isolates that differed their ability produce FBs were treated with a selection eight natural phenolic compounds aim identifying those able decrease toxin production at concentrations had limited effect on fungal growth. Among tested compounds, ellagic acid isoeugenol, which turned out be effective molecules against growth, assayed lower concentrations, while first retained its inhibit vitro, latter improved both growth FB accumulation. The accumulation was also maize kernels highlight importance appropriate dosages order avoid conditions are promote mycotoxin biosynthesis. An expression analysis genes involved allowed more detailed insights into mechanisms underlying inhibition compounds. fum gene generally down-regulated treatments; however, some treatments low-producing strain up-regulated without improving production. This study showed although different reduction, they can modulate biosynthesis transcription level opposite manners depending strain. In conclusion, basis vitro vivo screening, two phenols (ellagic carvacrol) appear promising alternative control occurrence maize.

The Fusarium verticillioides FUM gene cluster encodes a Zn(II)2Cys6 protein that affects FUM gene expression and fumonisin production.

Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by some Fusarium species and can contaminate maize or maize products. Ingestion of fumonisins is associated with diseases, including cancer and neural tube defects, in humans and animals. In fungi, genes involved in the synthesis of mycotoxins and other secondary metabolites are often located adjacent to each other in gene clusters. Such genes can encode struc...

FUM Gene Expression Profile and Fumonisin Production by Fusarium verticillioides Inoculated in Bt and Non-Bt Maize

This study aimed to determine the levels of fumonisins produced by Fusarium verticillioides and FUM gene expression on Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) and non-Bt maize, post harvest, during different periods of incubation. Transgenic hybrids 30F35 YG, 2B710 Hx and their isogenic (30F35 and 2B710) were collected from the field and a subset of 30 samples selected for the experiments. Maize samples we...

Effect of fungicide on Fusarium verticillioides mycelial morphology and fumonisin B 1 production

The effect of fludioxonil + metalaxyl-M on the mycelial morphology, sporulation and fumonisin B 1 production by Fusarium verticillioides 103 F was evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the fungicide caused inhibition of hyphal growth and defects on hyphae morphology such as cell wall disruption, withered hyphae, and excessive septation. In addition, extracellular material...
